Marnie Ross is an abstract painter based in Sydney. She has been a finalist in numerous art prizes including the Paddington Art Prize, Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize and was awarded Highly Commended in the Waverley 9 X 5 Landscape prize. Originally a graphic designer, she became a fine artist after completing a Masters in Art at UNSW in 2010. Marnie is also the founder and curator of Little Things Art Prize founded in 2015.
Marnie’s work is a response to organic forms, in particular the evolving shadow patterns seen in the natural environment. Nature’s ever-changing designs created by light, movement and time inspire multi-layered compositions of vividly coloured shapes.
In recent years Marnie has been inspired by her immersion in the Australian landscape; bush paths, rural vistas and undulating valleys, experienced with the full spectrum of light patterns throughout a day. Abstract landscapes are reduced to minimal compositions, directing the focus to colour relationships and tones. She often explores surface texture using a combination of thin frosty glazes and solid forms floating on a base of wood or raw linen.
Marnie has exhibited in both commercial galleries and designer store platforms throughout NSW and Victoria. A large portion of her work is currently sold through Fenton & Fenton in Victoria.
